An important event in the early history of art occurred in the year 691 when the Council of Constantinople, formerly Byzantium, the capital of the Eastern Empire, decreed that "henceforth Christ was to be publicly exhibited in the figure of a man, not of a lamb." It marked the evaporation of all trace of the old reserve which Christians had felt in figuring the person of Christ; and, at the same time, it indicated as fit themes for art those sufferings in the flesh, from the representations of which the Christians of the earlier centuries had shrunk as from a profanation.
